Businessman Albert Tei and Shamsul remanded for six days in MACC probe

PUTRAJAYA: Both businessman Albert Tei and the Prime Minister's former senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin have been remanded for six days.

This was confirmed by lawyers Yusmadi Yusoff and Mahajoth Singh, representing Shamsul Iskandar and Tei, respectively.

Zaid Malek, another lawyer from Tei's legal team, said Tei was remanded after an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission at the Putrajaya magistrate's court.

"We are planning to file a revision against the order of the magistrate," he said when contacted on Saturday (Nov 29).

Earlier, Tei and the Shamsul arrived at the Putrajaya magistrate's court for the remand application. Both men arrived in a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission van at about 8.59am on Saturday (Nov 29).

As Tei was escorted from the van into the building, he was heard shouting in Bahasa Malaysia that this was the consequence of going against top leaders. He said such an act was an injustice against him, who loves the country.

Meanwhile, Shamsul Iskandar remained quiet as he was escorted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers.

On Friday (Nov 28), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said Shamsul, Tei and Sofia Rini Buyong were detained in connection with investigations into allegations that Tei paid bribes to recover funds said to have been distributed to several Sabah assemblymen.

"The case carries significant public interest, prompting the agency to expedite its investigations to prevent speculation or manipulation by any party," he said.

Azam emphasised that the investigation would be carried out professionally and fairly in accordance with the law.

"Individuals who wish to challenge the arrests have the right to do so in court," he added.

Azam said investigating officers have been instructed to complete the probe within a week for submission to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action.

"We urge the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is ongoing," he said.
