KOTA KINABALU: Investigations into alleged corruption by Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Akin will be conducted professionally, transparently, and independently by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar stressed that no one is above the law in Malaysia and that the courts will decide whether Shamsul should be prosecuted for corruption.
"If there is a case, should they prosecute him? That is their decision. If they think he should be prosecuted, go ahead. If the courts decide to free him, Alhamdulilah.
"If the courts decide to convict him, go ahead. That’s how we lead this country. Don’t compare me with them," said Anwar, referencing Perikatan Nasional.
He also joked that his old room at Sungai Buloh prison remains vacant, adding: "Who wants to volunteer, please, go ahead."
Without naming names, Anwar criticised Perikatan leaders for preaching integrity despite alleged misappropriation of billions during the previous administration.
"You squandered billions and now you are silent. Be consistent… You can be a Tun or a Tan Sri, I don’t care, you stole billions and you must be investigated and charged.
"If you are guilty, then go to jail," he said.
Anwar also took aim at a certain officer from a previous prime minister’s office who allegedly fled to Dubai amid a graft probe.
He emphasised that Malaysia must remain peaceful and should not provide a platform for leaders to incite hatred among different races.
"Use your power to develop the country, not finding shares and projects," he said.
Shamsul is expected to appear at MACC headquarters on Friday (Nov 28) to assist in the probe into allegations he received bribes from businessman Albert Tei.
MACC has also stated that Tei will be summoned on Dec 1 after requesting a postponement for technical reasons.
On Tuesday (Nov 25), Shamsul confirmed his resignation as the senior political secretary to the Prime Minister, claiming he was being targeted with allegations meant to tarnish the Madani government’s image.
