Floods: Evacuee numbers continue to rise, T'ganu hit again

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of evacuees housed at temporary relief centres in flood-hit states continued to climb Wednesday (Nov 26) morning, with Terengganu once again affected, while Pahang was the only state to record a drop.

KELANTAN remains the worst-hit state, with the number of victims rising to 9,615 people from 3,643 families compared to 9,337 last night.

Four more districts – Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang – were flooded in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department’s Public Infobanjir portal reported that water levels at several major rivers in Kelantan remain high, with several stations registering readings above the alert, warning and danger thresholds as at 8.30am.

In PERLIS, the number of flood victims increased to 6,087 this morning following the opening of three additional relief centres, compared with 5,244 evacuees at 17 locations last night.

According to data from the state disaster management committee secretariat, all evacuees from Padang Besar, Arau and Kangar are housed at 20 relief centres as of 8am.

In KEDAH, the number of flood victims increased to 3,049 people from 1,021 families as of 8am, from 1,629 people (543 families) from Kubang Pasu and Kota Setar, housed at 17 relief centres.

The state disaster management committee said Kubang Pasu district recorded the highest number of victims (2,247 people, 783 families) in 15 relief centres.

In Kota Setar, 802 people from 238 families are seeking shelter at two relief centres.

Meanwhile, the Public Infobanjir website announced that 10 rivers in Kedah have exceeded the danger level, including Sungai Anak Bukit (3.37m), Sungai Padang Terap (4.55m), Sungai Perik (14.53m), Sungai Bata (11.2m) and Wang Tepus (10.339m).

In SELANGOR, the number of victims also increased, climbing to 2,970 people from 799 families from 2,773 people (749 families) the night before.

There are now 23 relief centres operating in the seven districts affected by the floods.

Selangor DID data showed that only three rivers exceeded the danger level, namely at the Hulu Selangor SKC Bridge (19.67m), Meru town, Klang (4.42m) and Pintu Air Ijok, Kuala Selangor (4.21m)

Meanwhile in TERENGGANU, floods hit the state again in two districts, Marang and Besut, with 153 victims from 45 families relocated to 10 relief centres as of 8am.

According to Social Welfare Department figures, 63 victims from 16 families from the Marang district have been placed in five centres, while in Besut, 90 victims from 29 families have also taken shelter in five locations.

The levels of Sungai Chalok at Jambatan Chalok, Setiu and Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak, Besut have exceeded the alert level.

In PENANG, flood victims remain 50 people from 11 families in the only relief centre that is still active in the Central Seberang Prai district, according to a National Disaster Control Center update as of 6am.

In PAHANG, Raub Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Samasuddin Kambade said a total of 23 victims from 11 families who had been placed at the Balairaya Kampung Ulu Sungai relief centre were allowed to return to their homes this morning following complete recovery from the flood.

A total of 19 victims from eight families are still sheltering at the Dewan Seberguna Dato Omar Kuala Medang relief centre in Lipis.

In SABAH, a spokesman for the Public Works Department said two landslides occurred on Jalan Bukit Bendera Upper, Kota Kinabalu, at KM0.850 near the Bayshore Condominium and at KM2.550, following continuous heavy rain.

He said warning signs have been put up at both locations and monitoring is ongoing, with both roads still accessible.

Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens has also been suggested as an alternative route.

The state disaster management committee said it is continuing to monitor the situation following continuous heavy rain since early this morning. – Bernama
