Sabah polls: Henry Saimpon takes break from campaign trail to attend convocation

KOTA KINABALU: Parti KDM’s Kiulu candidate Henry Saimpon attended his convocation at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor during a break from campaigning.

The 50-year-old Kiulu native received a master’s degree in political science, having previously earned a diploma in political science from the same university.

“I am grateful that after working hard for several years, I have completed this master’s degree programme. I would like to thank the lecturers for their guidance, knowledge and encouragement,” he added.

Saimpon is contesting an eight-cornered fight.

He thanked his family for their support and sacrifices, and said that he hopes his success inspires continued excellence, including in politics.

Before entering politics in 2018, he was active in NGO management and KDM Malaysia.

He currently serves as the association’s deputy president.

Saimpon began his football career with the Sabah Premier League team in 1997.

He joined Johor FC in 2002 before returning to Sabah from 2004 to 2009.

He was appointed manager of the Sabah football team from 2019 to 2020.

Sabah won the Premier League under his management and qualified for the Super League.

His political involvement grew after 2018, and he became KDM vice president in 2023.

KDM was then led by Datuk Peter Anthony, who is now serving a jail sentence.

Saimpon recently launched seven core manifesto points for Kiulu voters.

The points include infrastructure and public facilities, agriculture empowerment and land ownership for local residents.

They include accelerating the PANTAS system and elevating sports as well as boosting the economy, including eco tourism, education and welfare.

They include promoting local customs and culture as the Kiulu community’s identity.
