One killed, three injured after 4WD plunges into ravine in Kunak


KUNAK: A man died and three others were seriously injured when the Isuzu D-Max four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle they were travelling in skidded and plunged into a six-metre deep ravine on Jalan Kunak-Tawau.

Kunak Fire Station chief Mohamad Omarbatha said a team of six firefighters, along with a fire engine and the Emergency Services Assistance Unit, were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 4.15am on Monday (Nov 24).

When the team arrived at the scene at 4.38am, they found the vehicle at the bottom of the slope with four victims trapped inside.

"A victim identified as Herdin Basri was confirmed dead at the scene by the Health Ministry team, and his body was handed over to the police for further action,” said when contacted.

Three other victims – Rahman Sulaiman, 39, an Indonesian national; Mohd Ali Gapare, 35; and Mohd Hafiz Haling, 28 – sustained semi-critical injuries.

They were taken to Tawau Hospital and Kunak Hospital for treatment. – Bernama
