Floods: Number of victims rises with over 12,000 evacuated across eight states

PETALING JAYA: The number of flood victims nationwide has risen to 12,482 as of 2pm on Monday (Nov 24) in eight states, Sinar Harian reports.

The Malay language daily reported that, according to the latest report from the Social Welfare Department's Disaster Info site, Kelantan remains the hardest hit with 9,314 people housed in 37 temporary relief centres (PPS).

The affected districts include Tumpat, Bachok, Kota Bharu, and Pasir Puteh.

The Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department reported that the situation is under control, but close monitoring continues due to forecasts of persistent rain.

Perak is the second most hit state, with 1,415 victims sheltered in 21 PPS across Perak Tengah, Manjung, Larut, Matang, Selama, and Batang Padang.

Meanwhile, Terengganu has recorded 285 victims with one PPS operating in Besut, while Kedah has 417 victims in three PPS in Kulim and one in Kubang Pasu.

In Perlis, two districts are affected, Padang Besar and Kangar, involving 435 victims housed in six PPS.

Penang reported 410 victims in four PPS in Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah.

Selangor recorded 171 victims from 51 families in one PPS in Sabak Bernam, while Sarawak has 44 victims from six families in one PPS in Miri.

Authorities remind residents in high-risk areas to comply with evacuation orders to avoid safety risks and to refrain from activities in rivers or areas prone to sudden flooding.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) also advised the public to stay updated on weather conditions and river water levels, prepare basic necessities as a precaution, and prioritise family safety if evacuation is necessary.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had previously issued a severe continuous rain warning for several areas in the East Coast and northern Peninsular Malaysia throughout the week.
