ALOR SETAR: The controversy over the use of Chinese script on the Kedah Rubber City groundbreaking ceremony foundation stone has been described as an issue deliberately exaggerated by certain parties for political gain.
Kedah Exco for Industry, Investment, Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, said claims that the state government is promoting foreign culture are baseless, as Malay script was also displayed.
"Many political opponents are trying to play up the issue of Chinese script on the Kedah Rubber City foundation stone. In reality, Malay script was present, the official speech was in Malay, and both Kedah and Malaysian flags were proudly flown," he said in a Facebook statement.
Previously, several quarters criticised the inscription on the foundation stone, claiming it glorified foreign identity.
"Foreign investors bring technology, job opportunities and prosperity for the people. As hosts, we respect their identity just as they respect our diverse languages and culture.
"PAS and Perikatan Nasional are not narrow-minded. We never hinder progress or restrict anyone’s right to religion or ethnicity. We defend national identity while also opening the door to billions in investments for the people’s future," he said.
He explained that if PAS and Perikatan were anti-other races, Kedah would not be among the states attracting the most investment, including from Japan, the United States, Europe and China.
"How could thousands of jobs be created? Why would foreign companies be lining up to invest?" he asked.
Haim clarified that the Chinese inscription simply means ‘laying the foundation’.
"They are apparently afraid of a foundation stone with Chinese writing meaning ‘laying the foundation’. They see the Kedah flag as if it were the Chinese national flag. What makes them so phobic?" he said.
He described the issue as little more than an attempt to stir political unease.
On a separate note, he assured that Perikatan guarantees a more stable, fair and open administration for Sabah if given the mandate.
"If Sabahans want a more stable, progressive, and open future, trust that voting for PAS and PN candidates is a vote for progress, stability, and a better future for Sabah—we’ve already shown this in Kedah.
"If Perikatan governs in Sabah, feel free to practise your own culture and religion. Sabah will prosper further with its abundant natural resources and the honest leadership PN offers," he added.
