Malaysia recorded 190,304 marriages, 60,457 divorces in 2024, says Stats Dept


PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has registered 190,304 marriages and 60,457 divorces in 2024, according to the Marriage, Divorce and Rujuk Statistics 2025 released by the Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM) on Thursday (Nov 20).

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that the number of marriages in 2024 rose by 0.9% to 190,304, up from 188,614 in 2023.

The Crude Marriage Rate (CMR) remained unchanged at 5.6 per thousand population in 2024, with Muslim marriages accounting for 72.3% of all recorded marriages.

Mohd Uzir noted that divorces in 2024 increased by 4.1% to 60,457 from 58,095 in 2023, with the Crude Divorce Rate (CDR) rising to 1.8 from 1.7 per thousand population.

The number of Muslim divorces increased by 7.3% in 2024 (47,577) compared to 2023 (44,322).

Meanwhile, the report highlighted a 4.7% decline in rujuk cases in 2024, with numbers falling to 5,563 from 5,835 in the previous year.

Selangor recorded the highest number of rujuk cases at 1,148, while Labuan had the lowest with 13.

According to the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), rujuk refers to "bringing back the wife who has been divorced by talak raj'ie to the bonds of marriage by making a particular pronouncement". – Bernama
