Speaker: No request for change in opposition leader

NO official submission has been made to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s office over the change of opposition leader, says an official from his office.

A representative from the Speaker’s office confirmed that the office has yet to receive an official letter from the opposition to request a change of the opposition leader.

“At this moment, no official request has been made,” the representative told The Star.

The claim surfaced following a report by a Malay news portal saying that Putrajaya MP Datuk Radzi Jidin will be replacing Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as the new opposition leader.

The report quoted a draft of an internal document, allegedly linked to Bersatu which contained a request for the party to take action against certain individuals to restore stability in the party.

In a similar development, PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah told a Malay daily that the party did not receive any news from Perikatan Nasional that Radzi will be replacing the current opposition leader.

During the debate on the Supply Bill 2026 at the committee stage for the Health Ministry yesterday, Hulu Langat MP Sany Hamzan “congratulated” Radzi for his appointment as the opposition leader.

“Congratulations to the Putrajaya MP who is rumoured to be appointed as the next opposition leader for Parliament,” he said.

Reports of Bersatu's internal fighting intensified after the party sacked five of its leaders, including Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, for violating the party’s code of conduct on Oct 14.

The suspension and sacking came amid talk that the group was involved in a movement collecting statutory declarations aimed at toppling Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as party president.
