Sabah polls: EC issues reminder on nomination procedures

KOTA KINABALU: The Election Commission (EC) has reminded all prospective candidates for the 17th Sabah state election to submit their nomination papers between 9am and 10am this Saturday (Nov 15).

EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the nomination papers must be submitted to the respective returning officers at the 25 nomination centres by the candidate, proposer and seconder.

"...or they may be submitted by any two of them, or by any one of them," he said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 13).

Khairul Shahril also advised prospective candidates to complete their forms and conduct preliminary checks with the returning officer's office or the Sabah election office before nomination day and to make their deposit payments in advance.

"The payment receipt must be brought on nomination day as proof of payment," he said.

He added that candidates representing political parties must also present an authorisation letter from their respective parties allowing them to use the party's symbol when submitting their nomination papers.

Khairul Shahril said candidates who have paid their campaign material deposit are subject to the Election Offences Act 1954 and local authority by-laws.

He also reminded all candidates and political parties involved to comply with the laws, regulations, codes of ethics, and directives issued by the EC, local authorities and the police to ensure a smooth nomination process.

The EC has set polling day for the 17th Sabah state election on Nov 29, while early voting would take place on Nov 25. – Bernama
