PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he is "surprised" by talk about the return of a former minister to the Cabinet.

Asked if Khairy Jamaluddin would rejoin the Cabinet, Anwar replied in jest, "Really, who told you that," when speaking to reporters at the National Development Awards and Symposium organised by the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister’s Department.

Speculation has been circulating about a former Umno member and former minister making a comeback to the Madani administration, with talk in Putrajaya of a potential Cabinet shake-up.

This follows the impending end of senatorships for two ministers and the recent resignation of another.

The Senate terms of Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir and Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz are set to expire in December, along with that of the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

Khairy previously served as Youth and Sports Minister (2013–2018), Science, Technology and Innovation Minister (2020–2021), and Health Minister (2021–2022) under various previous administrations.
