KUALA LUMPUR: They paid the ultimate price for the peace, safety and security that people enjoy today.

Many came to honour our World War II (WWII) heroes who died in the line of duty during the Remembrance Day service at Tugu Negara here.

Those who paid tributes at the National Monument included representatives from foreign embassies and high commissions to Malaysia.

The solemn and poignant service was organised by the British High Commission to Malaysia.

The event also saw the attendance of senior representatives from the Malaysian Armed Forces and army veteran associations.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma said the ceremony filled him with a mix of emotions for the brave men and women across the world who sacrificed everything so others could live in peace.

“Let us remember them and thank all our current serving personnel as well, together with the heroes from previous wars and conflicts,” he said yesterday.

Sharma said the service was also a reflection of reconciliation and shared humanity of modern society with the attendance of representatives from countries they had fought against in past wars.

“I think that just shows how much we all have moved on and how we can always build new relationships with countries and with people even if we’ve been enemies at one point in time.”

Remembrance Day is held on the second Sunday of November. This year’s service marked the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII.
