SHAH ALAM: Studies are being carried out to improve the implementation of sugar subsidies to reduce leakages and ensure it reaches targeted recipients, says Datuk Fuziah Salleh.
The Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said the matter would be presented to the Cabinet soon.
“We are looking at several suggestions and incentives. It will be brought to the Cabinet for further discussion,” she said after launching the 8th Buy Malaysian Products Campaign at Lotus’s Setia Alam here Thursday (Nov 6).
Fuziah was responding to reports that the government was planning to refine the mechanism of targeted subsidies for essentials such as sugar, cooking oil and rice.
Earlier this week, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the implementation would take place in phases to ensure efficient distribution and minimise leakages.
Her statement was in response to a question from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH–Bukit Bendera) during a parliamentary sitting.
Fuziah also urged consumers to make use of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme to buy subsidised 1kg cooking oil packets.
The four-day campaign, which began Thursday, features booths and exhibitions of products by 19 small and medium enterprises at the retail chain.
In her speech, Fuziah stated that her ministry will hold various programmes next year to promote local products in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
She said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling Budget 2026, had allocated RM20mil for this purpose.
