KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s role as a facilitator in peace negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia under the KL Peace Accord was acknowledged by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, says Datuk Mohamad Alamin.
The Deputy Foreign Minister said as a sovereign country that has close relations with Thailand, Malaysia would not respond to unverified viral claims on social media regarding the issue, stressing that the government would continue to monitor developments closely.
"Most importantly, it is the presence of our Prime Minister and the Thai Prime Minister during the signing of the KL Peace Accord during the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits.
"It was also witnessed by US President Donald Trump.
"The Thai Prime Minister himself acknowledged our Prime Minister's role as the facilitator in the peace talks.
"This is something we should be proud of," he said in his winding-up speech for the Supply Bill 2026 for his ministry in Parliament on Thursday (Nov 6).
He was asked to comment on a recent viral video where Anwar was called a "hidden enemy" and a spy of the United States for mediating the peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia.
In a ceremony held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit on Oct 27, Cambodia and Thailand signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, a historic ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia and facilitated by the United States.
The agreement officially put an end to the Cambodian-Thai hostility along their disputed border, paving the way to solidify long-term peace efforts and foster mutual trust between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his Thai counterpart Anutin Charnvirakul, while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump signed as witnesses.
