Pensioner uses savings to care for disabled men

A FORMER medical assistant is using his pension to care for mentally challenged men at a special centre which he set up himself in Pahang, Sinar Harian reported.

Shohaimi Abdul Latif, 70, last worked at the Psychiatry Department of Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh.

He spoke of his past experience seeing patients who were abandoned.

“After retiring in 2011, I thought of setting up a centre,” he said.

In 2013, he used his pension to open Rumah Sejahtera in Kampung Lebak, Temerloh.

“We started with four to five residents. There are now 28 people aged 30 to 70 who are sent here by their family members to receive care,” he said.

His aim is to help mentally challenged people lead more orderly lives.

“There are residents who have been treated but became unstable again after they stopped taking medication, or they have been neglected due to lack of supervision,” he explained.

Shohaimi said various sports activities and outdoor events are also organised for the residents.

> An entrepreneur and social media influencer has dispelled talk that he made his wife undergo a weight loss bariatric surgical procedure as a way to sell slimming products, Kosmo! reported.

On Oct 8, she decided to undergo the surgery at a private hospital in Ipoh, said Prince Syed, whose real name is Syed Muhammad Syah Hasif Syed Othman.

“I told her not to do it, but she was determined to proceed because she was tired of the constant public criticism about being fat and short despite having a pretty face,” the 33-year-old said.

He said his wife, Fatin Syazwani Ishak, was not someone who would be easily upset “but the frequent mocking on social media had stressed her out”.

Fatin Syazwani told Harian Metro that critics should stop attacking her husband as he had nothing to do with her decision.
