Suspect in Jerlun beheading case refused psychiatric treatment, say cops

ALOR SETAR: The man who allegedly beheaded his brother-in-law in Kampung Pida 3, Jerlun, last Friday (Oct 31) is believed to have refused psychiatric treatment for the past five months.

Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the suspect had also refused to take his prescribed medication, which may have triggered hallucinations leading up to the attack.

"The suspect holds a psychiatric treatment card but has refused to receive treatment for about four to five months. This likely caused him to experience hallucinations and develop false suspicions toward the victim.

"According to his family, he previously received treatment at Alor Setar Hospital after suffering from depression since 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic," he told a press conference at the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters here on Monday.

Adzli said the suspect has been remanded and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

"Once the remand period ends, we will charge the suspect if there are no complications," he said.

Earlier, it was reported that a 45-year-old man died after he was allegedly attacked by his 38-year-old brother-in-law with a machete, causing his head to be severed from his body. - Bernama
