Budi95: Govt detects unusual spending patterns in areas near the borders

PETALING JAYA: The Finance Ministry have detected unusual spending patterns, including recipients using up their monthly limit in a short period and repeated purchases near border areas.

Following this, the government will now further tighten its monitoring of Budi95 to prevent any misuse of the petrol subsidy.

"The government will not compromise any misappropriation or resale of subsidised petrol to unqualified buyers.

"Stern action under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 will be enforced on those involved in such activities," the Finance Ministry said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 1).

As of Oct 31, a total of 13.1 million Malaysians have used Budi95, spending a total of RM2.66bil while enjoying total savings of about RM800mil in just the first month of the programme.

Since the initiative was launched on Sept 30, 16.55 million Malaysians have been approved to benefit from the subsidised RON95 petrol price of RM1.99 per litre, compared with the unsubsidised price of RM2.60 per litre.

“Budi95 ensures that the people receive subsidies directly without a complicated process.

“Clearly, this programme provides multiple benefits to the people and the country,” said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

Under Budi95, Malaysians aged 16 and above with an active driving licence are eligible to buy up to 300 litres of subsidised RON95 per month using their MyKad.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the Madani Government will continue to refine the Budi95 scheme, including reassessing e-hailing drivers’ fuel quotas to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

For full-time e-hailing drivers, the monthly limit was doubled to 600 litres on October 13, benefitting nearly 58,000 drivers.

Average usage among private recipients stood at 98.2 litres per month in October, well below the 300-litre monthly quota.

Only 0.7% of all beneficiaries fully utilised their quota before the end of the month.
