MAHB to implement action plan following Aerotrain failures

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) plans to implement a comprehensive action plan to address the recurring reliability issues involving the KL International Airport (KLIA) aerotrain system.

The project will be managed by a team from Malaysia Airports in collaboration with contractors, consultants, and an independent technical assessor. It is currently being developed with active engagement from all relevant parties.

MAHB said it would also continue to work closely with the Land Public Transport Agency and the Ministry of Transport to address and resolve the issue.

"The decision follows a series of aerotrain incidents that prompted the airport operator to formally address concerns with contractors Alstom and IJMC-PESTECH Joint Venture (IPJV) and demand immediate corrective action,” it said in a statement on Friday (Oct 31).

Preliminary assessments revealed a declining trend in system reliability, particularly involving the vehicle and power distribution systems. Despite receiving data and assurances from the contractors, the information provided did not instil sufficient confidence in the aerotrain’s current reliability.

MAHB said as an immediate measure, a full shuttle-bus service will be deployed during off-peak hours between 11.00pm and 5.00am daily to facilitate planned and additional inspection and rectification works.

Additionally, from 5.00am to 11.00pm, a concurrent shuttle-bus service will operate alongside the aerotrain to ensure uninterrupted passenger movement.

MAHB said it is prepared to mobilise extensive resources to provide full shuttle-bus services in line with the requirements of the comprehensive action plan.

Since resuming service in July 2025, the aerotrains have carried more than 6.55 million passengers and operated nearly 95,000 trips.

"Passenger safety and comfort remain our top priority, and we are committed to upholding the highest operational standards as we work to restore full confidence in the aerotrain system,” said MAHB. – Bernama
