Woman, 73, killed in traffic collision near Muar


MUAR: A 73-year-old was killed on the spot after the car she was in veered onto the wrong side of the road and hit an oncoming car.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the incident took place at the Sungai Abong/Bakri bypass near here on Wednesday at 10.10pm.

“The car which entered the wrong lane was driven by a 44-year-old woman while the other car was driven by a 19-year-old girl,’’ he said in a statement.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the 73-year-old victim, who was sitting in the back seat sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.

He said both drivers and a passenger in the oncoming car only suffered minor injuries and are being treated at KPJ Bandar Maharani Hospital here.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the body of the deceased was sent to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital Muar for autopsy, and the 44-year-old driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,’’ he said.

Section 41(1) is the law against causing death by reckless driving or dangerous driving.

Under the section, it carries penalties of a jail term of five to 10 years, a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, and a driving ban of at least five years upon conviction.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz called upon those with information on the case or witnesses to come forward to the Muar Police District Contingent Traffic Unit or contact the investigating officer Insp Muhamad Azim Aziz at 0189704143 to assist with the investigation.
