Penang Hill, Air Itam dam trails temporarily closed for public safety

GEORGE TOWN: The recent heavy rainfall has led to the temporary closure of the Penang Hill Heritage Trail owing to a minor slope failure along a section of the route.

Penang Hill Corporation said on Facebook on Friday (Oct 24) that the affected stretch has been temporarily closed for public safety, and for its maintenance team to clear the area.

It said no injuries were reported, and clearing works are being carried out to make the site safe for visitors again.

"Hikers and visitors are advised to refrain from using the trail until further notice," it said, adding that it would monitor the situation closely and take all necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) says that access to the Air Itam Dam and its surrounding areas is closed until further notice.

In a notice issued on Facebook on Wednesday (Oct 22), it said the closure became necessary following incidents of trees falling along the access road leading to the dam.

"Our maintenance and safety teams are carrying out clearing and assessment works to ensure the area is safe," it said.

The temporary closure covers the access road leading to the Air Itam Dam and along the walking trails and recreational areas in the vicinity.

PBAPP said the public is advised not to enter the restricted area until further notice.

It said the measure was taken to prevent any accidents or injuries during the ongoing safety works.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation in prioritising public safety," it added.
