Workers find overturned car with elderly victim in Beluran ravine

KOTA KINABALU: Construction workers arriving at a Pan Borneo road site in Beluran found an overturned vehicle with a victim inside.

They had noticed a strong stench and searched the area before spotting the wrecked car in a ravine at kilometre 75 of the Beluran–Telupid road at about 10am on Tuesday (Oct 21).

Beluran OCPD Supt Hasan Majid said the victim was an 80 year old man from Kampung Sungai Sapi.

“The car was discovered by construction workers passing through the area who went to check on it,” he said.

He said the victim was believed to have lost control before skidding off the road into a nine metre deep ravine.

The victim was found pinned in his seat, he said.

Supt Hasan added the victim may have been dead for more than 24 hours before being found.

“We urge witnesses to this accident to come forward and assist in our probe,” he said.

Those with information can contact investigating officer Insp Asdar Miktar at 011 1548 1071 or Beluran police station at 089 511 22.

In a separate fatal crash earlier the same day, a motorcyclist and his daughter were killed at Jalan Merotai in Tawau.

Before the 5.40am crash, the 54-year-old rider was sending his 24 year old daughter to work at Guthrie Estate.

A vehicle carrying five people from Tawau to Merotai swerved into their lane and hit them.

Tawau OCPD Supt Champin Piuh said initial investigations indicate the 38 year old driver lost control before colliding with the motorcycle.

“The impact dragged the motorcycle and its riders to the left shoulder, causing severe injuries leading to their deaths,” he said.

He said both victims were declared dead at the scene.

The driver and his four passengers were unhurt.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
