Police seek driver in fatal Simpang Ampat hit-and-run incident


NIBONG TEBAL: The police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that killed a woman pedestrian while she was crossing a road in a hit-and-run incident in Simpang Ampat here on Tuesday (Oct 21).

South Seberang Perai OCPD Supt Jay January Siowou said the crash reportedly happened at 7.35pm while the woman was crossing from Taman Belibis to Simpang Ampat before she was hit by an unidentified vehicle.

"The woman suffered severe injuries to her head and was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body was sent to Sungai Bakap Hospital to identify the cause of death.

"We are trying to identify the pedestrian's identity and we are checking closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the scene and trying to locate independent witnesses and the vehicle involved to facilitate investigations," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 22), adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He also urged those with information on the hit-and-run to contact the investigating officer, Insp Al Bukhari Ishak at 013-5822366 or the nearest police station to assist with investigations. – Bernama
