JOHOR BARU: Pakatan Harapan is expected to chart its direction ahead of the widely speculated Johor election during the coalition's national convention on Sunday (May 17).
Its communications director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also coalition chairman, would deliver the convention's keynote address at 2pm on Sunday.
He said Anwar is expected to touch on possible Johor and Melaka state polls, as well as preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16).
"The three-year maturity period for Parliament has passed and the latest GE16 can be held by the end of 2027.
"So within the next one-and-a-half years, we will certainly be facing GE16," he told reporters after inspecting the convention venue on Saturday (May 16).
When asked whether Pakatan would discuss working with Barisan Nasional in the Johor polls, Fahmi said cooperation between both coalitions at the federal level had yielded positive results.
He cited initiatives such as Sumbangan Asas Rahmah as well as the handling of the Negri Sembilan political crisis as examples.
Meanwhile, Fahmi brushed aside a planned press conference by former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who are expected to announce their next political move in Petaling Jaya at 2pm on Sunday, the same time as the Pakatan convention.
Separately, he also responded to the resignation of Federal Territories PKR Youth chief Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi, saying he would need to appoint a new lawyer.
"Good luck to him. I will have to find a new lawyer.
"He had helped me in several cases before this. I wish him all the best and hope he heals from whatever hurt he is feeling," said Fahmi.
He added that Asheeq, who also headed PKR's Batu division, only joined the party after the Sheraton Move and was not with the party during its lowest points including the betrayal of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Fahmi said Asheeq's departure would not destabilise the party.
Earlier, Asheeq reportedly said he quit after becoming disillusioned with what he claimed were government decisions that had strayed from PKR's reform agenda.
