Govt formulating policy to strengthen nation's food security, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is finalising a new agricultural policy as a proactive response to the increasingly complex challenges of food security.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the policy focuses on efficient and productive agricultural and agro-food production, the sustainability of the agro-food system, regional food diplomacy, healthy and balanced nutrition, and inclusive economic growth.

"It will be strengthened with specific legislation to coordinate and standardise the implementation of policies and actions between the various agencies and ministries involved.

"This step is important to strengthen governance as well as ensure the effectiveness of the overall implementation of the National Food Security Policy,” said Anwar in a Facebook post.

Along with the implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Prime Minister said the agricultural sector needed to be strengthened through a new approach that is more sustainable, resilient and technology-oriented.

Earlier, he chaired the Cabinet Committee Meeting on the National Food Security Policy, which touched on strategies to catalyse the agricultural industry. – Bernama
