PUTRAJAYA: International Labour Organisation (ILO) director-general Gilbert F. Houngbo will undertake a two-day working visit to Malaysia from Monday (Oct 20).
The Human Resource Ministry said this marks the first official visit by an ILO director-general since Malaysia joined the organisation in 1957.
"This visit signifies recognition of Malaysia's active role and continued commitment to strengthening the principles of social justice, workers' rights and decent work at both the global and regional levels," it said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 19).
According to the ministry, Houngbo's visit will also provide an opportunity to enhance existing cooperation at the Asean-ILO level, particularly in developing the future workforce, promoting universal social protection, ensuring job security, and empowering migrant workers.
During his visit, Houngbo is scheduled to meet with Human Resource Minister Steven Sim, as well as the government's tripartite partners - the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) and the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).
The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public Service (Cuepacs) will also participate in the meeting to represent public sector unions.
"The meeting will serve as a platform to discuss the direction of labour policy, regional labour market challenges, and opportunities to renew cooperation between Malaysia and the ILO," it said.
Houngbo is also scheduled to attend the Global Skills Forum (GSF) 2025 on Wednesday, together with delegates from Asean member states.
"The forum is expected to serve as an important platform to strengthen regional cooperation in advancing the skills development and future employment agenda," the ministry added.
Founded in 1919, the ILO is a United Nations agency whose mandate is to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards.
Malaysia has been a member of the ILO since 1957 and has ratified 18 ILO Conventions of which 14 are in force. ILO works with its constituents in Malaysia in a number of areas including migrant worker rights, forced labour and supply chains. - Bernama
