BUTTERWORTH: The Defence Ministry plans to recruit former personnel from the Malaysian Army’s elite commando unit known as the Grup Gerak Khas (GGK), or Special Service Group to join the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) in safeguarding the nation's entry points.
Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said the selection process not only involves picking top GGK veterans but also from other elite units such as the Parachute Brigade (10 Para) and similar formations.
"Our main priority, however, will be our GGK veterans," he said after launching the Armed Forces Fund Board's (LTAT) inaugural Usahawan Wira Empowerment Programme at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base on Friday (Oct 17).
Adly said that appointments will be made under AKPS, but the ministry will identify and recommend their best former personnel from GGK.
He described the initiative as a valuable opportunity for former servicemen to continue serving and protecting the nation.
He noted that the initiative aims to leverage the experience and expertise of former GGK commandos in supporting AKPS.
During a question-and-answer session in Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, Adly announced that GGK veterans would be absorbed into AKPS.
Under Budget 2026, the AKPS was allocated RM45mil to strengthen national borders and support the hiring of 220 staff, prioritising military veterans.
Earlier, Adly launched the inaugural Usahawan Wira Empowerment Programme 2024/2025, designed to enhance the socio-economic resilience and entrepreneurial capacity of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans.
