1.7 million Sabahans set to elect their govt on Nov 29

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s 1.7 million-odd voters will head to the ballot box on Nov 29 for state polls that are expected to cost a staggering RM116.8mil.

The polls, assured Election Commission chairman Datuk Ramlan Harun, would not disrupt the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, which is slated to begin on Nov 25.

He said the commission had taken into account all logistical aspects to ensure there is no overlap between the polling sites and examination centres.

“The voting process will be held on Saturday. It will not disrupt the SPM examination,” he said.

Nomination day is on Nov 15, while early voting is on Nov 25.

On proposals that Sabah voters in Peninsular Malaysia be allowed to cast postal votes, Ramlan said the EC has yet to finalise the issue.

“For now, Sabah voters who are not in the state will have to go back to cast their vote,” he said.

Ramlan said a total of 1,784,843 will be eligible to exercise their rights as registered voters in this election.

They comprise 1,760,417 ordinary voters, 11,697 military personnel and their spouses, as well as 12,729 police personnel and spouses.

Malaysians residing overseas are reminded to register for postal voting by Oct 21 while election workers, EC members or officers, police, military and media personnel have to register on Nov 12.

Applications for postal vote applications must be submitted online, with guidelines on how to apply available on the EC’s online portal.
