Immigration nabs over 60 foreigners working illegally at JB eateries


JOHOR BARU: The Immigration Department has detained a total of 62 foreign nationals found working without valid permits at various food and beverage outlets here.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said an operation was carried out at two locations around Johor Baru starting 7pm on Saturday (Oct 11).

"Checks were conducted on 143 individuals at two restaurants.

"The 62 foreigners detained, aged from three to 50, were detained for various immigration offences such as not possessing valid travel documents, overstaying and misusing social visit passes," he said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 12).

Of those detained, three were Bangladeshi men, five Indonesian men, 30 Myanmar men, one Nepali man, one Sri Lankan man, two Indian men, two Vietnamese women, three Indonesian women, 14 Myanmar women and one Myanmar girl.

He said the detainees have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.

"Two Malaysian restaurant managers were also detained under the Immigration Act for employing foreign workers without valid permits," he said.
