Cops record statement from victim's mother, probe connection with suspect


KUCHING: Police have recorded a statement from the mother of a three-year-old girl who was allegedly fatally abused at Kampung Rampangi, Santubong, near here, on Tuesday (Oct 7).

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said that the 37-year-old woman has not been detained, as the investigation is still ongoing.

"So far, we have only recorded the mother’s statement to assist with the investigation, and there is no need to detain her at this point,” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak Police Commissioner’s monthly assembly at the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters here Friday (Oct 10).

He added that police are probing the relationship between the woman and the 32-year-old male suspect, who is currently remanded to assist with the investigation.

"We believe they are acquainted, but the exact nature of their relationship is still under investigation…it could be just friends or possibly a romantic relationship. We will let you know, but they are certainly not married,” he said.

Mohamad Zainal said the man was arrested within 24 hours of the incident, and a urine test confirmed he had tested positive for drugs.

He said the victim’s post-mortem was carried out today and assured the case would be investigated thoroughly.

Yesterday, Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a 32-year-old man was arrested in Kampung Krian, Jalan Padawan, to assist with the investigation of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
