Remand of Sibu reckless driving suspect extended by two days

SIBU: A man arrested for reckless driving last week has had his remand period extended for two more days.

The man was detained on Sunday (Oct 5) and police obtained a three-day remand order the following day.

He was held in connection with a viral video that showed a car hitting a motorcycle, causing the rider to fall.

The driver then sped off, hitting seven other vehicles along Jalan Oya.

On Thursday (Oct 9), Magistrate Oon Kork Chern granted the extension following a request by the investigating officer.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili had said earlier that the 25-year-old suspect was arrested immediately after the incident on Sunday and tested positive for amphetamines.

ACP Zulkifli said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Section 42(1) provides for imprisonment for up to five years and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000 upon conviction.

Those found guilty can also be disqualified from holding a driving licence for at least two years.

The drug charge, meanwhile, carries a fine of up to RM5,000, or up to two years' jail, or both if found guilty.
