23 people treated after chemical spill in Tanjong Malim factory


IPOH: About 23 people received treatment after inhaling isocyanate chemicals during maintenance work at a manufacturing factory in Tanjong Malim.

Muallim OCPD Deputy Supt Suhaimi Muhamad said all the victims, aged between 19 and 45, were involved in the incident that occurred at a factory at Jalan Jelawai, Proton City Industrial Area.

He said police were informed of the incident by the Tanjong Malim Health Clinic at around 2.20pm after several victims sought medical attention, reporting that they had inhaled isocyanate, a type of chemical substance, while working at the factory.

“All the victims were later referred to Slim River Hospital for further treatment and are in stable condition.

“A team from the Tanjong Malim Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene to carry out cleaning and decontamination works,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 9).

He added that the situation is now under control and that there is no further threat to public safety.

Earlier, it was reported that about eleven people suffered breathing difficulties and eye irritation after a chemical spill at a manufacturing factory in Tanjong Malim.

There was a chemical spill involving isocyanates caused by a leak in the factory’s pipe system, estimated to have affected approximately 15 litres of the substance.
