GRS will crumble after Sabah polls, predicts SAPP president

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee anticipates Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to crumble after the coming state elections.

Yong, whose SAPP and Sabah STAR left GRS on Oct 1, said there were conflicting positions within the coalition parties and their electoral partners.

He said that problems in the electoral pacts would surface during nomination day, as there would be fighting amongst themselves.

"I don't think there will be a GRS coalition after the election. You will see on nomination day the problems in GRS, Pakatan Harapan and so on and Barisan Nasional.

"They will be fighting amongst themselves. Those on top will be fighting, parties will be fighting, candidates will be fighting and the grassroots will be fighting.

"So I don't see GRS still around after the election," Yong told reporters at the airport here Tuesday (Oct 7), where he turned up to welcome Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who returned from Kuala Lumpur.

Yong, who ruled out returning to GRS and brushed aside any reconciliation, predicted that a Sabah Bloc comprising local parties would form the next government.

He said SAPP was talking with other local parties and reiterated that their focus was on uniting Sabah-based political movements.

"Only Sabah local parties. I have said this before, the struggle must have a purpose.

"Don't be like a dog chasing after a car (with no purpose)," he added.

Yong, a former chief minister, said that Sabah STAR and SAPP will be forging an alliance as both parties have strongly struggled for state rights for decades.

He brushed aside a question about whether he was contesting the coming election, saying it was too early to say as the election dates have yet to be announced.

In the 2020 state elections, Yong did not contest in the election but was appointed nominated assemblyman.
