Demolition of Rohingya settlement in Hulu Langat to take two weeks, says MP

HULU LANGAT: The demolition of structures housing Rohingya citizens in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Tekali, here is expected to take two weeks, says Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan.

He said the demolition would start involving structures built on government reserve land and a portion of private land.

However, he said that the three-storey building that went viral on social media would not be demolished for the time being because it was on private land.

"The landowner needs two weeks to demolish the single-storey structures at the back (of the area)" he said, adding this excluded the three-storey building.

Checks showed that the landowner started demolishing some of the buildings at 9am and the three-storey building remained intact.

Meanwhile, a Rohingya at the location said only one family was living in the building.

Hussein, 31, who works as a house builder, said he lived there from 2018 to 2020 and a paid monthly rent of RM500.

"In 2020, officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Hulu Langat District Council ordered us to move out," he said. – Bernama
