Government studying Pakistan’s proposal to export beef to Malaysia


PUTRAJAYA: The government will look into Pakistan’s proposal to export up to US$200mil worth of beef to Malaysia.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said his Pakistani counterpart Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif raised the matter when he arrived in Malaysia on Sunday (Oct 5) night.

“There is interest in exporting beef to Malaysia, and we will facilitate this. I was assured the price is competitive, and I will do what is necessary on the proposal of up to US$200mil,” he added.

“I received him at about 10pm last night, and because he was a brother, he pressed the case in a good way, so I said welcome and let us discuss,” said Anwar.

Anwar was speaking at a press conference with Shehbaz at Perdana Putra on Monday (Oct 6).

He said this is part of efforts to enhance agricultural collaboration between Malaysia and Pakistan and added that Shehbaz also proposed deeper collaboration in STEM, ICT, TVET, E&E and semiconductors.

“Pakistan is among Muslim countries that were clearly far ahead initially in this field, so the potential is there,” he said.

Shehbaz is in Malaysia for a three-day official visit in his first trip as Pakistani prime minister beginning Oct 5.
