No untoward incidents at Saturday's URA protest in KL, says cops

KUALA LUMPUR: The protest against the proposed Urban Renewal Bill (URA) and the ongoing Gaza conflict today in front of the Sogo Shopping Centre has proceeded without issue.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, when met at the scene, thanked all for their cooperation.

“I thank them for listening to police advice and ensuring no outward incidents occurred.

“I also apologise to the people of Kuala Lumpur because we had to close several roads in stages earlier today to ensure the congregation move safely,” he said.

Police estimate the number of protestors at the gathering to be between 1600 to 1,800 people.

ACP Sulizmie Affendy said police will review the recordings of the speeches conducted to see if any had touched on 3R issues.

“We will open an investigation paper if there is a need. We will review the speeches,” he said.

Earlier today, at around 2pm, groups of demonstrators began gathering at the shopping centre.

Almost all were seen bearing flags and shirts in support of Palestine and the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels that were recently detained by Israeli forces.

Political leaders such as PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan were also seen, alongside Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Radzi Jidin.

The protest was organised by both NGOs and political parties to protest against both issues.

Speakers also urged the public to protest the scheduled visit by United States President Donald Trump.

Protestors began dispersing at around 4.15pm.
