150 people moved to relief centre after Pontian floods

PONTIAN: A total of 150 people were sent to a temporary relief centre here after floods hit the area.

According to the Johor Disaster Management Committee, 43 families were evacuated to Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Raya after floods struck several villages early Saturday (Oct 4).

“As of noon on Saturday, the number of evacuees rose to 150 compared with 107 at 10am on the same day,” it said.

“The affected areas are Kampung Melayu Raya, Kampung Paya Embun, Kampung Pak Kalib, Kampung Seri Menanti and Kampung Maju Jaya,” it added.

The committee said the flood was believed to be caused by continuous heavy rain and water runoff from Gunung Pulai.

“The centre was opened at 6am and remains the only one operating in the state so far,” it said.
