Detention of Global Sumud Flotilla volunteers is against universal values, says King

KUALA LUMPUR: The interception and detention of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) volunteers, despite the humanitarian nature of their mission, goes against universal values of compassion, says His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

His Majesty described the flotilla as a noble mission aimed at helping those suffering from hunger, including the elderly, women and children.

"The volunteers involved in the GSF, including Malaysians, had taken on risks and challenges to carry a message of humanity to the international stage.

"They are only on a humanitarian mission carrying food supplies, yet they were blocked and detained.

"This goes against universal humanitarian values," His Majesty said in a Facebook post on Friday (Oct 3).

He added that he had been briefed on the latest developments regarding the GSF, including Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to secure the release of the volunteers.

"May every noble effort currently being undertaken and mobilised by the government to assist our volunteers be eased and protected by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala," he wrote.

Earlier, His Majesty granted an audience to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Istana Bukit Tunku here.
