Thirty Global Sumud Flotilla vessels continue towards Gaza despite interceptions

PETALING JAYA: 30 vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission are continuing their journey to Gaza, despite eight being intercepted by the Israeli Navy as the convoy entered the red zone.

Cinta Gaza Malaysia chief executive officer Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri Kamaruzaman announced the update.

“Thirty vessels are still advancing towards Gaza at this moment,” he said in a post on Threads.

The Global Sumud Flotilla said eight humanitarian vessels were intercepted and detained by the Israeli Navy.

The eight confirmed vessels are Deir Yassine/Mali, Huga, Spectre, Adara, Alma, Sirius, Aurora and Grande Blue.

At 2.03am Malaysian time on Thursday (Oct 2), the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) confirmed that GSF vessels were intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters as the convoy headed to Gaza on a humanitarian mission.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry called the convoy a provocative act and ordered it to change course.

The ministry added that the Israeli Navy contacted the GSF and urged it to change course, warning the convoy was approaching an active combat zone and violating a lawful naval blockade.

Several volunteers who managed to send messages on social media said Israeli forces used water cannons and sprayed their boats.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was also detained and is confirmed to have been taken to an Israeli port.
