Sungai Krian boat tragedy: Bodies of three remaining victims found

BETONG: The bodies of the three remaining victims of the boat tragedy in Sungai Krian, near the Kaba Ferry jetty in Saratok, were found on Sunday (Sept 28).

A spokesman for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said a search and rescue (SAR) operation began at 8am on Sunday.

"At about 10.10am, one body was found by villagers. The SAR team managed to locate the remaining two bodies at 10.15 am and 10.45 am,” he said in a statement.

In the 5.30 pm incident on Friday (Sept 26), a boat carrying 10 passengers capsized while crossing Sungai Krian from the Sessang jetty to the Pusa jetty.

Six Indonesian passengers managed to save themselves by clinging to a nearby barge before being rescued by another boat. Four men were reported missing, and the first victim’s body was found on Saturday (Sept 27).

Those involved in the SAR operation included seven Saratok Fire and Rescue Station personnel, assisted by two personnel from the state JBPM K9 Unit and a tracker dog named Bella.

Others involved were eight Saratok policemen, six Saratok Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel, as well as 36 villagers who mobilised nine boats. – Bernama
