Trump praises Malaysia's role in Thai-Cambodia ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he spoke to Donald Trump over the phone on Thursday (Sept 25), where they discussed the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire and the United States President's attendance at the Asean Summit here in October.

Anwar said the phone call with Trump took place during a courtesy visit from United States trade representative Jamieson Greer earlier on Thursday. Greer is currently in Malaysia for the 57th Asean Economic Ministers Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

"During a phone conversation with President Donald Trump earlier, I reiterated Malaysia's commitment, as Asean Chair, to continue playing a proactive role in ensuring regional peace, particularly concerning the Cambodia-Thailand issue," he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Sept 25).

"President Trump acknowledged Malaysia's success in facilitating the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand as a significant achievement, demonstrating Malaysia's credibility and Asean's steadfastness.

"I also conveyed my appreciation to him for the role played by the United States in helping to achieve the ceasefire," said Anwar.

He also said Malaysia is looking forward to Trump's attendance when it hosts the Asean Summit, which other world leaders are expected to attend.

Anwar said he had a 30-minute meeting with Greer in Putrajaya earlier on Thursday (Sept 25), where they exchanged views on strategic ties between the two countries and Asean, especially in trade.

"I stress that the interest of Malaysia and the United States in concluding the reciprocal tariff agreement now being negotiated will also guide policy direction and planning for the business community of both countries.

"Malaysia, as a trading nation with an open economy, has always maintained good relationships with all trading partners, enabling domestic economic growth," Anwar said.
