Penang cops seize RM1.1mil worth of ecstasy in multiple raids

GEORGE TOWN: Police have busted a drug syndicate with the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of over 7kg of ecstasy worth RM1.1mil.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said the suspects, including a woman in her 30s, were arrested by police from the state's Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department (NCID).

"The suspects were detained in four locations in George Town between 9pm on Sept 22 and 9am on Sept 23," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 24).

Comm Azizee said in one of the raids, police found a building used to pack and store the drugs and seized six plastic bags containing methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) weighing 69.4g.

He said police also found another 225 packets of powdered MDMA weighing 2,901g and three plastic bottles containing MDMA powder weighing 4.16g.

He said the syndicate had been active since early this year.

He added that checks on the suspects found one positive for drugs while three others have criminal records.

Also seized were four cars and a motorcycle worth more than RM400,000 and jewellery worth RM20,125.

He said all suspects have been remanded until Sept 27 and that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death sentence or life imprisonment upon conviction.
