JOHOR BARU: Two men have drowned in two separate incidents in Ulu Tiram and Pontian, says the Johor Fire and Rescue Department.
In the first case on Sunday (Sept 21), a 36-year-old man drowned in a mining pool near Savana Hill at Sungai Redan here.
A department spokesman said they received a distress call at 9.38am and deployed firemen from the Johor Jaya station with support from the Skudai water rescue team.
He said that a search operation was launched using specialised diving equipment and a rescue boat and rescuers recovered the victim's body at 2.49pm.
"He was found about 10m from shore at a depth of 7m. The body was brought up using a rescue boat and handed over to police for further action," the department said in a statement on Sunday.
In Pontian, a 65-year-old man drowned while cleaning the propeller of a fishing boat near the Pontian Kecil fishermen's jetty.
The department said it was alerted at 12.02pm and firemen from the Pontian Baru station were sent to the scene.
The team arrived at the jetty at around 3pm and began search operations.
At 3.25pm, the victim's body surfaced about 10m from the jetty and was retrieved.
The operation ended at 4.10pm and his remains were handed over to police for further investigation.
