Jalan Burma sinkhole caused by leaking sewage pipe, says MBPP

GEORGE TOWN: The sinkhole that appeared on Jalan Burma Road here near the Transfer Road intersection has been traced to a leaking sewage pipe.

In a statement, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said the 9am incident on Sunday (Sept 21) caused significant damage to the road, adding that the pipe involved was 300mm in diameter and owned by Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).

The leak, which involves a high-pressure pump system (force main), triggered the formation of the sinkhole on Jalan Burma.

MBPP, in collaboration with the police, immediately closed off Jalan Burma and diverted traffic to Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong to ensure public safety.

Authorities are awaiting further investigations by IWK and MBPP.

MBPP added that the investigation would be completed by Sunday evening.

The public is advised to plan their routes in advance to avoid the Komtar area due to the ongoing road diversion on Burma Road. – Bernama
