KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has called off the state-level Malaysia Day celebration to focus on rescue and recovery efforts following widespread floods and mudslides triggered by continuous rain in at least seven districts.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the state government’s immediate priority is to manage the crisis, coordinate recovery efforts and ensure timely rescue operations for affected communities.
“In this time of difficulty, the well-being, welfare and security of the people are of utmost importance. We must direct all focus and resources to those affected,” he said yesterday.
He said the Yang diPertua Negeri, Tun Musa Aman, had been informed of the cancellation of the celebration scheduled for tonight at Padang Merdeka here.
Hajiji said he had instructed the State Disaster Management Committee to remain on full alert and be prepared for prompt action as conditions on the ground continue to unfold amid the prevailing bad weather.
The committee, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, is monitoring the development round the clock to ensure immediate responses to any emergencies in the affected districts.
While conveying his sympathies to the victims and their families, Hajiji also urged the public to remain vigilant, adhere to safety advisories and cooperate fully with rescue teams as efforts are intensified across the state.
Organising chairman Datuk Christina Liew said the decision to cancel the state-level Malaysia Day celebration was made after taking into account erratic weather and the plight of flood victims.
“Please take care of your own safety and take precautions in facing unpredictable events,” she advised, adding that any inconvenience caused by the cancellation is deeply regretted.
