KUALA LUMPUR: No fatalities were reported after a road accident involving 12 Malaysians in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India, on Sunday (Sept 14) evening, says Wisma Putra.

"Several individuals in the group sustained minor injuries, and four others sustained heavy but not life-threatening injuries. All are receiving treatment at local hospitals,” said the ministry in a statement issued on Tuesday (Sept 16).

Wisma Putra said the Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai is in close contact with the relevant local authorities, the injured Malaysians and hospital representatives to extend necessary consular support.

The Consulate General has also facilitated communication between the affected Malaysians and their next of kin in Malaysia, it added.

The incident occurred when a tourist van carrying 12 Malaysians skidded off the road due to hilly terrain conditions.

"The Consulate General took immediate action to contact the local authorities to get the latest information regarding the accident and establish contact with the Malaysian victims.

"All Malaysian passengers were rescued and provided with immediate medical attention,” Wisma Putra said.

The ministry also issued an advisory advising Malaysians travelling in India to exercise caution during the ongoing monsoon season, particularly in hilly areas prone to slippery roads and landslides.

"Travellers are strongly encouraged to register with the nearest Malaysian mission to enable timely assistance during emergencies, and are also encouraged to obtain travel insurance coverage,” it said.

The ministry added that it would continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as necessary.

For consular assistance or enquiries, Malaysians may contact the Consulate General of Malaysia in Chennai, India, via phone at +91 44 2433 4434/ +91 44 2433 4435 or email at mwchennai@kln.gov.my. – Bernama
