KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has notified the Election Commission of the vacancy of the Subang parliamentary seat.
“The Honourable Member for Subang has submitted a letter to me to relinquish his position as a Member of Parliament, which came into effect yesterday,” Johari said during his opening remarks at the special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 11).
“I have notified the EC of the vacancy of the Subang seat in line with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution,” he added.
According to Article 54(1), any casual vacancy in the Dewan Rakyat must be filled within 60 days of the EC formally establishing the vacancy.
Wong Chen announced on Monday that he had stepped down as Subang MP.
In a statement, Wong, who is from PKR, confirmed that he had handed over his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul last Wednesday.
“On Aug 5, I met with the Speaker and handed over my resignation letter as MP, effective 5pm, Aug 10.
“This was to allow parliamentary officers three working days to prepare for the vacancy of the Subang parliamentary seat.
A few minutes before releasing the statement, he had posted a video on his Facebook page of him packing his belongings at his Subang office, with the caption "No caption needed".
This development follows political friction within PKR regarding the blocking of constituent funding allocations via the MyKHAS portal for several MPs linked to the Bersama political movement.
Wong Chen is a three-term MP, first elected to the Kelana Jaya seat in 2013, and later re-elected to the renamed Subang constituency with a landslide majority in 2018 and 2022.
