MELAKA: Villagers in Paya Luboh in Tangga Batu here received an unexpected visitor during the long Malaysia Day holiday when a crocodile appeared in the banks of Sungai Paya Luboh.
The reptile, estimated to be about 1.5m long, was first sighted on Sunday (Sept 14) by a group of anglers at the riverbank, and quickly drew the attention of nearby residents
Pantai Kundor representative Datuk Tuminah Kadi said she went to the location after receiving calls from concerned villagers.
"The reptile may have strayed here because of recent flash floods and high tides," she said on Monday (September 15).
She said the sighting is also worrying, as the river is often where children play and villagers come to fish.
Tuminah said she had contacted the Melaka Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) to act on the matter and to trap the crocodile.
Earlier, a team from the Tangga Batu Fire and Rescue Station carried out monitoring before the case was handed over to Perhilitan.
The crocodile was also spotted on Monday (September 15) at the riverbank before a picture of the reptile was captured.
Meanwhile, a Melaka Perhilitan spokesman said his team will monitor the situation and will attempt to capture the reptile.
The spokesman also unveiled that the river is not a natural habitat for crocodiles.
