Political party leader accused of misappropriating over RM33,000 in party funds

KOTA KINABALU: Members of a newly launched political party in Sabah might have to take their feet off the gas after their president was accused of embezzling party funds.

When the party first launched recently, it went all out to recruit new members, attract potential self-funded candidates for the upcoming state elections and was actively involved in monthly meetings.

However, trouble began to brew when an alleged political supporter grew impatient with the constant requests for money from the party leader.

It was learnt that over RM33,000 had been transferred to the president’s personal bank account, with confidence that the money would be used to fund the party programmes.

Several activities have been carried out, including meetings, but the amount spent did not reach that total, a source said. The source added that when asked, the party president refused to reveal where the remaining funds went, but apparently promised to top it up soon.

In a turn of events, instead of explaining to party members and returning the balance, several top party leadership members who demanded an explanation were fired from the party.

Several police reports have since been lodged.

When contacted, Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Kasim Muda said he would look into this matter.

The said party president could not be reached for comments as of press time.
