PUTRAJAYA: The government will roll out a new renewable energy initiative using building rooftops, called the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar Atap), starting Dec 1.
The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said in a statement that the programme is a continuation of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) initiative, which ended on June 30.
It said the programme is guided by several key principles, including retaining the core concept of NEM, which allows excess energy to be sold to the grid as an offset, while incorporating adjustments to make it more attractive than the Solar for Self-Consumption scheme.
The energy offset rate will be based on the market electricity price, or system marginal price, similar to the NEM NOVA programme, to ensure long-term sustainability, Bernama reported.
The solar system installation limit has been set at up to 100% of maximum demand, enabling users to optimise solar power for their own consumption.
“Programme guidelines and the registration system will be available from Dec 1, and can be accessed via the Energy Commission and Seda Malaysia websites,” the statement said.
The ministry added that the rollout of Solar Atap is expected to drive the growth of distributed generation in the national power supply system, while giving consumers more opportunities to utilise rooftop space.
It expressed confidence that the new initiative will help the nation achieve its target of 70% renewable energy capacity in electricity supply by 2050, in line with the Malaysia Madani principles.
