Teen among four nabbed for cable theft after high-speed chase


JOHOR BARU: Police arrested four men, including a 16-year-old student, after a high-speed chase linked to cable theft in Majidee here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident, which has gone viral on social media, took place at about 5.15am on Saturday (Sept 6).

“The chase started along Jalan Songket and ended at Jalan Bunga Raya in Majidee. Police managed to stop the suspects’ car and arrested three locals and a foreigner aged between 16 and 26,” he said here on Monday.

ACP Raub added various tools used to cut cables and the stolen cables were also seized during the arrest.

“Checks revealed that two of the suspects have prior records involving drugs and cable theft. A urine test found three of them positive for methamphetamine, while one tested negative,” he added.

ACP Raub said the teenage suspect is still in school, while the other three are unemployed.

He added that all four suspects have been remanded for four days until Wednesday to assist in investigations.

ACP Raub said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both.

He added that the three who tested positive for drugs are also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the foreign suspect is being probed under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid travel documents, which is punishable with a fine of at least RM10,000, a jail term of up to five years, not more than six strokes of the cane, or any combination of these.

ACP Raub said the arrests also helped police solve six cable theft cases around here.
